☀️🌞 First Day of Summer 2024 🌞☀️ Today, June 20th, marks the summer solstice and the official start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere! The summer solstice is the longest day of the year, with the most hours of sunlight. This year’s solstice is unique — it’s the earliest summer solstice since 1796 — that was 228 years ago! The solstice occurs at 3:50 PM CDT (Baton Rouge). After today, the days will gradually start getting shorter again as we head towards the fall equinox. #summersolstice #summersolstice2024 #summerishere #longestday #pointecoupeeproud

Today we honor and celebrate Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce that the Civil War had ended and that all enslaved people were now free - over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Juneteenth is a day to reflect on the past, and current, struggles for freedom and human rights, while also looking ahead to continue working towards racial equality and justice for all. #Juneteenth #JuneteenthDay #EndSlavery #NeverStopLearning #EqualityForAll #PointeCoupeeProud

Today, we celebrate the symbol of our nation's unity, freedom, and history. Let us also remember the powerful message of the Statue of Liberty, a beacon of hope and liberty for all. "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." - Emma Lazarus This iconic quote reminds us of the enduring values of freedom and opportunity that our flag represents. Let's cherish and uphold these principles as we wave our flags high today!

80 Years Since D-Day: Remembering the Friendships That Saved the World On June 6, 1944, the Allied forces launched the D-Day invasion of Normandy, the largest seaborne military operation in history. Over 150,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, France, Greece, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, and Poland stormed the beaches of northern France, marking the beginning of the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi occupation. This pivotal World War II campaign was made possible by the "Special Relationship" between American President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Despite their differences, these two leaders forged an unbreakable bond and united their nations toward the common goal of defeating the Axis powers. Churchill frequently wrote to FDR urging American involvement, stating "The price of greatness is responsibility." After Pearl Harbor, the two men met frequently to plan strategy, with Churchill visiting the White House on Christmas Eve 1941. FDR declared Churchill "my old and good friend" as they rallied the American people. Their partnership culminated in the daring D-Day invasion, which Churchill called "the most complicated and difficult operation that has ever taken place." The bloody battle was a decisive victory, leading to the defeat of Nazi Germany less than a year later. As Churchill eulogized, FDR's leadership helped "achieve the victory" in the war for freedom. The United States also maintained strong relationships with other Allied nations: - Australia: Approximately 3,200 Australians participated in the D-Day landings, with significant contributions from the Royal Australian Air Force and Navy. - Belgium: The U.S. and Belgium have a long history of cooperation, with Belgian forces playing a crucial role in the liberation efforts. - Czechoslovakia: The U.S. supported the Czechoslovak government-in-exile and maintained diplomatic relations throughout the war. - Denmark: Danish resistance fighters provided valuable intelligence and support to the Allied forces. - France: As the primary battleground, French forces and the French Resistance were integral to the success of D-Day and the subsequent liberation of France. - Greece: Greek forces contributed to the Allied efforts, particularly in the Mediterranean and Balkan regions. - The Netherlands: Dutch forces and resistance fighters played a significant role in the liberation of their country and supported the Allied invasion. - New Zealand: New Zealanders served alongside other Commonwealth forces, contributing to the air and naval operations. - Norway: Norwegian forces, including the resistance, provided critical support and intelligence to the Allies. - Poland: Polish forces, including the 1st Polish Armored Division, fought valiantly alongside the Allies in Normandy and beyond. On this 80th anniversary, we honor the sacrifices of the Allied troops who fought to liberate Europe. We also celebrate the enduring friendship between nations and leaders united in their shared democratic values against tyranny. #PointeCoupeeProud #DDay80 #RememberingDday #AlliedForces #WWII #History #Freedom #Democracy
