Going Gold for Our Kids
Imagine sitting in a doctor's office, holding your child's hand, and hearing the word "cancer." In that instant, everything changes. The laughter of recess, the excitement of a new school year, the simple joy of being a kid — all of it is suddenly overshadowed by hospital hallways, needles, treatments, and fear. For a child, and for the family that loves them, a cancer diagnosis is one of the most devastating moments a family can face. It steals innocence. It steals normalcy. It steals time that should be filled with birthday parties and ballgames and bedtime stories, and replaces it with waiting rooms and hard, unimaginable questions.
No parent should ever have to watch their baby fight for their life. No child should ever have to learn what a "port" is, or what it feels like to lose their hair before they've even lost their first tooth. And yet, right now, in towns just like ours, children are doing exactly that, showing more courage in a single day than most of us will ever be asked to show in a lifetime.
That is why the Pointe Coupee Parish School Board is proud to Go Gold this September for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. We see these children. We see their families. We see the sleepless nights, the strength it takes just to get through one more treatment, and the hope that refuses to die even in the darkest moments. And we stand with them.
Every year, an estimated 15,000 to 16,000 children and adolescents in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer, roughly 1 in every 285 children before the age of 20, with an average age at diagnosis of just 8 years old. Leukemias and brain and central nervous system tumors remain among the most common. But even amid such heartbreaking numbers, there is light: more than 80 to 85 percent of these children survive five years or more, a testament to the researchers, doctors, nurses, and caregivers who refuse to give up, and to the unbreakable spirit of the children themselves.
In support of Louisiana's Childhood Cancer Awareness Day, proclaimed by Governor Jeff Landry, our district will Go Gold on Tuesday, September 9th. We are asking every student, teacher, and staff member across Pointe Coupee Parish to wear gold or yellow that day, to say a prayer, to hug your children a little tighter, and to remember every family walking this road. Behind every gold ribbon is a real child with a real name, a real family holding on to hope with everything they have.
Mark your calendars. Wear your gold. Because no child should have to fight cancer alone, and no family should have to face it without a community standing behind them.
