Students at STEM are Throwing Paper Airplanes at School! Oh My!

The 8th grade STEM classes are getting the rare opportunity to throw paper airplanes at school without any consequences! Students were asked the question, "How can we make a paper airplane travel farther?" They conducted research to identify variables that would affect the flight distance of gliders. Initial trials were conducted using the paper airplanes with no modifications, and the distance traveled was recorded. From the information gathered, their next step was to modify their paper airplane making sure to only change one variable and then re-test. Students learned that some of their modifications actually made the distance shorter instead of longer.

The student with the airplane that traveled the farthest received a prize. The winning airplane traveled 1,710 cm (17.1 m or about 55 ft.).
