Last week, 5th graders from Valverda ELementary attended STARBASE in Rosedale, Louisiana. STARBASE is a Department of Defense-funded program aimed at fifth-grade students. The five-day interactive program focuses on the curriculum of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Throughout the week, students conducted an engineering-design project that helped them learn about space and lab modules inside and outside of the classroom environment. The aspiring young scientists also learned about and built rockets that were launched at the end of their five-day journey. Additionally, the students had the opportunity to use flight simulators in the computer lab.
The staff also worked closely with the teachers of visiting schools to give them new ideas for educating the students once they return to their regular school environment.
