On Friday April 7, Valverda Elementary School hosted a New Orleans Saints’ Pep Rally and Jr. Training Camp. Our school was able to host this event after being chosen through a grant that we received through our Physical Education Department. The grant was awarded by the NFL program Fuel Up to Play 60 and the Southeast United Dairy Industry Association.
The event began at 9:30 a.m. with a pep rally for the entire school in the school gym. This event consisted of awards from the Saints organization, a check presentation from Fuel Up to Play 60, pep rally games, cheers and chants, and an appearance by Gumbo, the New Orleans Saints Mascot. Following the Pep Rally, 150 students participated in the Jr. Training Camp outside with members from the Saints organization. During this training camp, students participated in football training camp stations, received a healthy snack and drink, and were encouraged to live a healthy, active lifestyle through 60 minutes of physical activity each day.
Our school reached this Touchdown Status for the grant by completing all six steps of the requirements. We were chosen the Overall Touchdown School for the New Orleans Saints’ Pep Rally and Jr. Training Camp for the 2016-2017 school year! Through the program, our school received a $3,000.00 grant which is sponsored by the National Dairy Council and the National Football League.
