HOMELESS STUDENTS

 

 

The Pointe Coupee Parish School System shall make every effort to ensure that all homeless children or youth residing within Pointe Coupee Parish have equal access to the same free, appropriate public education, including pre-school education, as provided to other children and youth.  In accordance, the Pointe Coupee Parish School System shall actively comply with all provisions as outlined by the Stewart B. McKinley-Vento Homeless Assistance Act (P.L. 101-645).  The Director of Federal Programs shall serve as the homeless liaison and collaborate with school personnel, community members, and pertinent others.  The homeless liaison will coordinate all activities necessary to ascertain that homeless children are identified, given full opportunity to enroll and succeed in school, as well as receive all other educational services for which they are eligible.

 

For the purpose of this policy as specified in the amendment to the McKinley-Vento Act (42 USC 11431 et seq.), the term homeless refers to individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, or have a primary nighttime residence in a shelter.  Additionally included are:

 

 

Admission policies of the Pointe Coupee Parish School Board shall be interpreted to indicate that there shall be no barriers to homeless children enrolling in school.  Any required records will be requested after the child has been enrolled in school.

 

Principals shall follow applicable procedures for identifying homeless children and referring children for appropriate services.

 

Title I will provide uniforms, school supplies, and fees for homeless students in order to assist in acquiring a free, appropriate, public education for homeless children.  Title I will also coordinate with school food service and guidance counselors on free lunch applications and social services.
